Private Studio or Studio Rental: Which One Is For You?
So, your photography business has picked up enough to start thinking about having a studio space you can call home… Congratulations!!!
Maybe you’ve been looking for spaces to rent that you could make work, bookmarking a few and rolling your eyes at the prices of others and after a while, you might start feeling a bit turned around with all of the options.
Take a breath. And say it with me: My work deserves a space to flourish. You’re not just looking for a place to set up shop, you’re looking for a place to call home!
Just like searching for a new place to live, it’s key that you ask all of the right questions to help you find the right fit for you….

HOW IS THE LIGHTING?
It may seem obvious, but what’s the lighting situation like? Do you want or need a lot of natural light? If so, look into which direction the windows are facing to check how much direct lighting the space will receive.
If you often use lighting equipment- are there enough outlets in the space? If you’re looking into a private studio and thinking about mounting lights, paper backdrops, or other equipment, be sure to ask about permissions.
Studio Rental Pro: Studio rentals and memberships typically include equipment, furniture, props, and more! So no need to shell out for that seamless paper backdrop or debate splurging on that lighting equipment.
Private Studio Pro: For obvious reasons, with a private studio you’re free to decorate and arrange the space in any way you like! If you’ve been dreaming of owning your own dimmable continuous LED lights and being able to shoot at the studio literally any time you want- a private studio might be for you,
What’s parking like?
If you struggle with finding parking, your client will struggle with finding parking. If you’re absolutely in love with a space but there is never any parking nearby, do a little investigating and see if there are any garages nearby or any areas that are less parked up.
Studio Rental Pro: Oftentimes studios (like ours!) will have parking lots either nearby or connected to their space and will send you an email with studio/parking directions to forward to your client. There’s also always a studio assistant on site, so if your client has any issues before you arrive, they can call the studio!
Private Studio Pro: If you’re renting a space that’s in a residential area, you’re more likely to not be concerned about parking. However- if there’s street parking, take note of any signs! Is there a time limit or visitor pass required?
What is my budget?
First and foremost- what are you working with? Look at your last quarter and create a realistic monthly budget for yourself. If you’re thinking about doing a private rental, be sure to budget in any initial expenses like the security deposit, furniture, and equipment.
Studio Rental Pro: No initial expenses! Renting a studio is a one-time fee, and studio memberships are often either a recurring standard rate, or a pre-pay for several months. So no need to worry about the security deposit, utilities, equipment/styling, or a security system.
Private Studio Pro: Admittedly and typically, studio memberships are more budget-friendly than a private studio. However, if you have a spare space in your own home- a garage, empty office, basement -this might be the most budget-friendly option! Just be sure to look into the laws surrounding running a small business from your home prior to committing.
DOES IT PASS THE VIBE CHECK?
Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in all of the nitty-gritty that we forget to listen to our gut! Think back to the first time you toured the space you’re interested in… Did you feel comfortable there? Can you envision yourself in that space with a client or getting immersed in a project?
Studio Rental Pro: There’s always a studio assistant present! Can’t remember how to connect the flash trigger? Want an outside opinion on something? Forgot safety pins or clamps? We promise the studio assistant will quickly become one of your shoot-day BFFs.
Private Studio Pro: If you prefer to work alone (and love the fact that you carry a tiny computer in your pocket, ready to answer any question) a private studio may be for you! Since a private studio is exclusively your space, you’re in total control of the energy in the studio.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to whether or not a private studio or a studio rental is right for you. But I highly recommend checking out both options and making a pro’s and con’s list about your top picks!
Happy studio hunting :)
