How To Tackle The Ever-Growing Content Mountain
Say it with me: I’ve got this.
Looking at a scroll or two’s worth of footage and photos that you know would make killer content can feel daunting. It’s like looking at a mountain ahead of you with nothing but flip-flops on.
So how do you proceed? Do you (A) just throw yourself at it in your spare time and hope you’ll strike gold along the way? Or do you (B) make a plan of attack and prepare for the journey ahead?
In this choose your own adventure, should you decide to take the (B) route, then read on…
Step 1
leverage easy research
You’re in the data collection stage. You’re going for walks around the mountain’s base, observing its climate cycles, sampling local flora and studying local fauna.
The next time you're on any social media platform, start a collection of saved posts for content inspiration. As you’re naturally online scrolling through reels or TikToks, begin to look at each post with a slightly more inquisitive eye.
When you find yourself stopping on different posts that capture your attention in any capacity (photog related or not!) save it to that collection.
The next time you’re looking for a place to start, scroll through your collections and make note of any “templates” you can follow from your saved posts. With each post, ask yourself- what caused me to stop scrolling?
STEP 2
MONTHLY PLAN-OF-Attack day
So you’ve done your research and feel inspired and ready to start your summit! Let’s go!!!
We all know that the journey actually begins in the time before. We pack our bags for the trip, double-check itineraries, and ensure we’ve set out important documents, keys, etc.
Carve out one hour a month (yes, just one hour!) to make a content strategy for the month ahead. You’re making your roadmap, your itinerary, your checklists.
Don't get stressed- make it cozy with a preferred beverage, some good music, and a little treat for yourself afterwards! During this stage you might outline:
Posting schedule that feels doable
Editing deadlines
Your next plan-of-attack day!
step 3
stick to the (new) plan
And you’re off! As you climb towards the top of the mountain, you might experience unexpected weather changes, delays, or challenges.
Rather than getting hung up on your initial plan of attack, don’t be afraid to stop and recuperate when needed. Feel like posting 4 times a week is too much? Dial it back to 2, and increase your frequency as you feel more comfortable.
To be honest, it’s kind of like adding salt to a dish... it's better to do a bit at a time than too much at once. If we overwhelm ourselves with content we'd like to edit and post but haven't yet gotten into the rhythm of incorporating it, we're more likely to just say "maybe this isn't for me."
final Takeaways
Be gentle to yourself, and remember that your work and business deserve to be shared and seen. Set realistic goals and deadlines, and remind yourself that any footage or content is never “too old” to be shared.
Push yourself when needed, but don’t burn yourself out. Listen to your body and remember that posting online isn’t life or death.
Get inspired- look to other artists and content creators for inspiration and always give credit where credit is due.
